Lawford is a small, unincorporated community located in Ritchie County, in the state of West Virginia, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but without its own local government.
History of Lawford
Lawford got its name from an early settler named Asby Poole Law. He was born in 1823 and passed away in 1868.
Early Settlers and Farms
Asby Poole Law and his family arrived in the area in 1848. They decided to settle on a farm that had been first cleared by Joshua Smith in 1840. This shows how new communities often grew around existing farms.
Lawford's Post Office
A post office was opened in Lawford in 1890. This was an important step for the community. It meant people could send and receive mail more easily. The post office served the area for many years. It finally closed its doors in 1943.
