Lawrence Makoare was born on March 20, 1968, in New Zealand. He is a talented Māori actor. Many people know him from his roles in The Lord of the Rings movies. He often played important bad guys, like Lurtz (an Uruk-Hai) and the scary Witch-King of Angmar.

Lawrence Makoare's Acting Career
Lawrence Makoare used to build roads. He started acting almost by accident! He went with a friend to a drama class. The teacher noticed how tall he was and asked him to perform.
He began his acting journey as a stuntman. Later, he became famous for his roles in the The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movie series.
Famous Roles in Middle-earth
In The Fellowship of the Ring, Lawrence played Lurtz. Lurtz was the leader of the Uruk-hai, a strong type of Orc.
In The Return of the King, he played two different characters. He was the powerful Witch-king of Angmar. He also played Gothmog, an Orc commander during the big Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
Later, in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Lawrence played Bolg. Bolg was another Orc commander and the son of Azog. However, he couldn't finish playing Bolg in the last Hobbit movie. This was because he was busy filming a TV show called Marco Polo. So, another actor named John Tui took over the role of Bolg.

Other Notable Appearances
Lawrence Makoare is also well-known among fans of the TV show Xena: Warrior Princess. He played two different characters in the third season. One was a Barbarian leader. The other was Maecanus, a helper of Aphrodite.
In 2002, he appeared in a James Bond movie called Die Another Day. In this film, he played a character named Mr. Kil.
The director of the movie The Dead Lands, Toa Fraser, wasn't sure about casting Lawrence at first. But Lawrence's acting was so powerful that it made the director cry!
