Lord Soulsby of Swaffham Prior

Ernest Jackson Lawson Soulsby, Baron Soulsby of Swaffham Prior (born June 23, 1926 – died May 8, 2017) was a British scientist who studied very tiny living things (a microbiologist) and organisms that live on or in other living things (a parasitologist). In 1990, he was given a special title for life, becoming a Conservative life peer. This meant he could be a member of the House of Lords, which is part of the UK Parliament, until he retired in December 2015.

About Ernest Soulsby

Ernest Soulsby grew up on his family's farm in Westmorland, a county in England. He went to Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Penrith, and then studied at the University of Edinburgh. Later, from 1978 to 1993, he was a Professor of Animal Pathology at the University of Cambridge. This means he taught about animal diseases. He was also a Fellow at Wolfson College, Cambridge starting in 1978.

From 1949 to 1952, Soulsby worked as a Veterinary Officer for the City of Edinburgh, helping to look after animals. He then taught about animal parasites at the University of Bristol from 1952 to 1954. After that, he taught about animal diseases at the University of Cambridge from 1954 to 1963. He also worked as a Professor of Parasitology at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States until 1978, when he returned to Cambridge.

Before he retired, Soulsby was also a visiting professor at many universities in Europe and the United States. He was honored by many international groups that study parasites and received many awards and special degrees. He was a member of the Council of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons from 1978. He also led the Royal Society of Medicine and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons at different times.

His Role in Parliament

On May 22, 1990, Ernest Soulsby was made a life peer, which gave him the title Baron Soulsby of Swaffham Prior. This title was linked to Swaffham Prior in Cambridgeshire. He officially joined the House of Lords on June 12, 1990. He was a member of the Conservative group in the House of Lords until he retired on December 31, 2015.

In Parliament, he helped with important discussions. For example, he was part of the government's investigation into fox hunting. He also advised the UK Government on many topics, including animal welfare, science, technology, and environmental issues. He was the President of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee. He also led the Royal Institute of Public Health until 2008.

Lord Soulsby was also the veterinary surgeon for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, meaning he was the animal doctor for the Queen. He wrote 14 books and many articles for veterinary magazines. In 1962, he married Annette Williams. Ernest Soulsby passed away on May 8, 2017, at his home in Swaffham Prior, when he was 90 years old.
