Layla Saad's Early Life
Layla Saad's parents came from different countries. Her mother was from Zanzibar, Tanzania. Her father was from Mombasa, Kenya. They both moved to Wales, where they met. Starting the #MeAndWhiteSupremacy Challenge
In 2017, Layla Saad wrote a blog post. It was called "I Need to Talk to Spiritual White Women About White Supremacy." Some people liked it, but others did not. In 2018, she started a challenge on Instagram. It used the hashtag #MeAndWhiteSupremacy. This challenge asked people to think about their connection to white supremacy for 28 days. Many teachers found it very helpful.
The Me and White Supremacy Book
After the challenge, Layla Saad wrote a digital workbook. It was called Me and White Supremacy Workbook. About 100,000 people downloaded it in six months. Famous people like Anne Hathaway and Elizabeth Gilbert supported the workbook.
In 2020, this workbook became her first book. The book was also called Me and White Supremacy. It became very popular. On February 16, 2020, it reached number 10 on The New York Times Best Seller list. This was for combined print and e-book non-fiction.
Increased Popularity of the Book
The book gained more attention in May 2020. This was after the murder of George Floyd and the protests that followed. Sales of books about race increased a lot. On July 12, 2020, the book reached number five on the New York Times Hardcover Nonfiction list. It was also third on the Sunday Times Bestsellers list on June 26, 2020. On the audiobook website Audible, it was sixth in non-fiction sales. This was for the week ending June 5, 2020. A special edition of the book for young readers is also planned.
