Lazzaroni (pronounced [laddzaˈroːni]) is a famous Italian brand known for its delicious biscuits and other baked goods. The company that makes these treats is called D. Lazzaroni & C. Spa.

Lazzaroni is especially famous for its Amaretti di Saronno biscuits. This company was the first in Italy to make biscuits using machines, not just by hand. They have been selling Lazzaroni biscuits and pastries since 1888.

A Sweet History: How Lazzaroni Began

The Lazzaroni family started their journey in the early 1700s. Carlo Lazzaroni moved his family to a town called Saronno in Italy. There, they began making Amaretti di Saronno biscuits by hand.

Carlo's sons, Paolo and Davide, continued the family business. Paolo moved to another town, Monza, and started making different products like mostarda (a type of fruit preserve) and liqueurs. Davide stayed in Saronno and kept making amaretti right in front of the town's big church.

Back then, people used horses to transport goods. But when rail transport (trains) became popular, things changed! Luigi Lazzaroni, Davide's son, joined the company. In 1888, they officially formed a new company called D. Lazzaroni & C. and built a new factory.

Growing Big: Lazzaroni's Success

In the years that followed, Lazzaroni became very successful. They made about 350 different kinds of biscuits! Their products were shipped all over the world. The company's logo even showed a steam boat to symbolize their worldwide reach.

During this time, new biscuits like Oswego, Nutritivo, Croccale, and Germovita became popular.

Changes Over the Years

In 1984, a big American company called Campbell's bought Lazzaroni. They wanted to make the brand known in even more countries.

Later, in 1991, an Italian company named Citterio bought Lazzaroni. Citterio makes products like ham, salami, and fresh pasta.

The years around 2000 were a bit challenging for the company. They faced some money problems and had to move their production. In 2004, the main factory moved to Isola del Gran Sasso.

In 2008, a group called Ragosta Group bought Lazzaroni. Their goal was to make the Lazzaroni brand strong and popular again.

Delicious Products: What Lazzaroni Makes

Lazzaroni offers many traditional baked goods. Their most famous product is the "original Amaretti di Saronno." These are often sold in special tin boxes with beautiful pictures on them.

They also make many breakfast biscuits and cookies, which are called "frollini." You can also find different pastries and mixed pastry boxes.

During holidays, Lazzaroni sells special treats like panettone (a sweet bread from Milan) and Colomba Pasquale (a dove-shaped cake for Easter). In 2010, they even started making gluten-free products for people who can't eat gluten.
