Leduc 010
Leduc 0.10

The Leduc 0.10 was a special experimental aircraft built in France. It made history because it was the very first plane in the world to fly using only a type of engine called a ramjet. This amazing aircraft first flew in 1947. Today, you can see it at the Musée de l'Air et de l'Espace, which is a museum in France.

What is the Leduc 0.10?

The Leduc 0.10 was not a regular passenger plane or a fighter jet. It was an experimental aircraft. This means it was built to test new ideas and technologies. Its main purpose was to see if a ramjet engine could power a plane all by itself. This was a very new and exciting idea at the time.

How a Ramjet Engine Works

A ramjet is a type of jet engine that works differently from the engines you might know. It has no moving parts, like fans or turbines, at the front. Instead, it uses the forward motion of the aircraft to compress the air.

Air Compression in Ramjets

Imagine a plane flying very fast. As it speeds through the air, air is forced into the front of the ramjet engine. This fast-moving air gets squeezed, which makes its pressure and temperature go up. This is called "ram compression."

Fuel and Thrust

After the air is compressed, fuel is sprayed into it and ignited. This creates a very hot, fast-moving gas. This gas then shoots out the back of the engine, pushing the aircraft forward. This push is called thrust. Ramjets only work well at very high speeds, usually faster than the speed of sound. This is why the Leduc 0.10 needed help to get started.

Early Flights and Development

Because ramjets need to be moving fast to work, the Leduc 0.10 could not take off from the ground by itself. It had to be carried into the air by another, larger aircraft.

Carried to the Sky

The Leduc 0.10 was designed to be carried on the back of a large transport aircraft called a S.E. 161 Languedoc. Once the Languedoc reached a high altitude and speed, the Leduc 0.10 would be released.

First Ramjet-Powered Flight

After being released, the Leduc 0.10 would then start its ramjet engine. Its first successful flight powered only by its ramjet happened in 1949. This was a huge step forward in aviation. It proved that ramjet engines could indeed power an aircraft.

Where is it Now?

The Leduc 0.10 was a very important aircraft for testing new engine ideas. It helped engineers learn a lot about ramjet technology. Even though it was an experimental plane, its flights paved the way for future high-speed aircraft. Today, the original Leduc 0.10 aircraft is preserved. You can visit it at the Musée de l'Air et de l'Espace (Museum of Air and Space) in Le Bourget, near Paris, France. It stands as a reminder of a time when engineers pushed the boundaries of flight.
