Growing Up and College
Lee Davis was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. He went to Ligon High School in Raleigh. After high school, he studied at North Carolina Central University. In his four years there, Davis scored over 1,000 points. He averaged more than 15 points in each game.
Starting His Pro Career
In 1968, Lee Davis was chosen by two different basketball leagues. The National Basketball Association (NBA) team, the Phoenix Suns, picked him. The American Basketball Association (ABA) team, the New Orleans Buccaneers, also drafted him. Davis chose to play for the Buccaneers in the ABA.
He was a "role player" for the team. This means he helped the team in specific ways, but he didn't play a lot of minutes. In his first two seasons with the Buccaneers, he didn't play much.
Playing in Memphis
The New Orleans Buccaneers team moved to Memphis in 1970. They changed their name to the Memphis Pros. Lee Davis stayed with the team. For the 1970–71 season, he played about twelve minutes per game. He also scored around six points per game. These were his best numbers at that time.
The next season, his playing time went down. His points and other stats also dropped.
In 1972, the Pros changed their name again to the Memphis Tams. A new coach, Bob Bass, took over. Under Coach Bass, Davis played more often. His stats improved a lot. He averaged thirteen points and eight rebounds per game. These were new personal bests for him.
His playing time went down a bit in the 1973–74 season. The team got another new coach, Butch van Breda Kolff. Davis scored fewer points and grabbed fewer rebounds that year.
Moving to San Diego
After leaving the Tams, Davis joined the San Diego Conquistadors for the 1974–75 season. He was very good at making his shots, hitting 52.8% of them. This placed him among the top players in the league for field goal percentage (how often a player makes a shot). He averaged almost twelve points and six-and-a-half rebounds per game.
The next season, the Conquistadors team was sold. The new owners renamed the team the San Diego Sails. Lee Davis was one of only three players who stayed with the Sails. The Sails team only played 11 games before they stopped playing altogether. Davis played in only seven games for the Sails. These were the last games of his professional basketball career.
He retired after eight seasons. In his career, he scored over 3,500 points and grabbed over 2,000 rebounds.
