Lee Uk-bae's Early Life and Art
Lee Uk-bae was born in Yongin, South Korea, in 1960. He studied sculpture at Hongik University. In the early 1980s, there were many protests in Korea for democracy. These events greatly influenced how he saw the world and how he wanted to create art.
He decided to use traditional Korean art styles, like Minhwa, in new ways. His goal was to make art that connected with everyday people and workers. He started his career as a writer and illustrator in the early 1990s. This was for a series of children's books called The World Is My Friend.
For two years, he worked hard on the pictures for Sori's Harvest Moon Day. When it was published in 1995, it changed his career. He became a full-time picture book illustrator. Today, he lives in rural Korea with his wife, who also writes children's books, and their children.
How Lee Uk-bae Creates His Art
Lee Uk-bae tries to capture the special colors of Korea in all his pictures. He uses traditional Korean painting tools and methods. This includes special brushes, paper, and paints that are bright and clear.
He wants to keep the traditions of Genre paintings from the Joseon period alive. These paintings show scenes from everyday life. He brings this style into modern times through his illustrations. You can see this clearly in his work for Sori's Harvest Moon Day. This book was even recommended by Japan's Ministry of Education.
His illustrations for The Strongest Rooster in the World (1997) are also famous. In this book, the mountains and sky are shown in dark, soft colors. This helps to show the rooster's feelings. This book was recognized at the Biennial of Illustration Bratislava in 1997. It was also shortlisted for a special exhibition at the Bologna Children's Book Fair in 1999.
Other books he illustrated, like Generous Grandma's Dumpling Making (1998) and The Mosquito and the Yellow Bull (2003), are also recommended in Korea. He wrote and illustrated A Tale of Tales (2008), which was honored by IBBY in 2010.
Lee Uk-bae believes art can encourage peace. This idea influences his work, such as When Spring Comes to the DMZ (2010). This book won an award in 2019 and was recommended by judges for the 2020 Hans Christian Andersen Award.
