Leland is a small, quiet place in Josephine County, Oregon, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own city government like a big city does. Instead, it's part of the larger county. Leland is nestled among the Klamath Mountains, right next to a stream called Grave Creek. This creek eventually flows into the bigger Rogue River.

Discovering Leland, Oregon

Leland is located in southwestern Oregon. It sits at an elevation of about 1,086 feet (331 meters) above sea level. The community is known for its natural surroundings, including the nearby mountains and rivers.

The Story of Leland's Past

Leland has an interesting history, especially with its post office and the railroad.

Early Days of the Post Office

A post office was first opened in Leland way back in 1855. This was a very important service for people living in the area. The first person in charge of the post office, called the postmaster, was McDonough Harkness.

The Railroad and a Name Change

Later, a railroad was built through the area. A train station was established nearby, and it was named Altamont. Altamont also had its own post office, which was started by Ben Parker. This post office operated for a few years, from 1884 to 1886.

In 1888, the name of the Altamont station was changed to Leland. At that time, the original Leland post office was moved to this new station. The post office at the Leland station continued to serve the community for many years until it finally closed in 1943.
