History of Leland Grove
How Leland Grove Started
Leland Grove became an official city in April 1950. This happened after residents in several neighborhoods voted for it. They wanted to make the roads better, as most were just dirt paths back then. The city started with about 1,060 people. It grew by adding more neighborhoods later on. In its first year and a half, the new city paved nine miles of roads. This was a big achievement, even though it cost a lot of money. The first city leaders, including a mayor and six aldermen, were elected without anyone running against them in June 1950.
Naming the City
Leland Grove, like the nearby village of Jerome, got its name from Jerome Leland. He was a well-known local farmer in the late 1800s. He often hosted events at a special grove on his farm. Much of the food served at Springfield's Leland Hotel came from the Leland farm. The original Leland farmhouse was in Leland Grove until 2021. Its owner, Frank Vala, had it taken down. In 2022, a small building from the farmhouse, called a summer kitchen, was moved to Washington Park in Springfield.
Keeping Independence
In 1957, the city of Springfield tried to make Leland Grove part of its own city. This is called annexation. Both city governments wanted this to happen, and people in Springfield voted strongly for it. However, the residents of Leland Grove, sometimes called "Grovers," voted against it. They wanted to stay independent.
After this vote, Springfield stopped providing fire protection to Leland Grove. The city was without fire services until 1959. Springfield tried to annex Leland Grove again in 1960, 1971, and 1976, but these attempts also failed. Leland Grove has remained its own city.
City Police Department
For its first 20 years, Leland Grove did not have its own police department. At first, if a delivery truck broke traffic rules, residents would call the city. Then, a city officer would contact the delivery company. In 1966, the city hired a private security company. Since 1970, Leland Grove has had its own police force to keep the city safe.
