Entrance to the Lemon Squeezer

The Lemon Squeezer is a really cool and unusual rock formation found in Harriman State Park, New York. It's a famous spot for hikers and adventurers! You can find it where two popular hiking trails meet: the Appalachian Trail (marked with white blazes) and the Arden-Surebridge Trail (marked with red triangles). This unique spot is close to the base of Island Pond Mountain in a town called Tuxedo.

What Makes the Lemon Squeezer Special?

When you first approach the Lemon Squeezer, you'll see a huge boulder resting on top of other rocks, forming a kind of natural archway. The trail actually goes right underneath this giant rock!

Squeezing Through the Rocks

After passing under the first boulder, the real adventure begins. The path narrows significantly, and you'll understand why it's called the "Lemon Squeezer"! Hikers have to squeeze through a tight space that is:

  • About three feet (1 m) (or 90 centimeters) high.
  • Only one foot (0.3 m) (or 33 centimeters) wide.
  • Tilted at a 15-degree angle, making it even more interesting to navigate!

Nature's Artwork

The trail continues through more amazing rock formations. You might even spot pine trees growing right on top of a thin rock ceiling above the path. It's like nature created its own incredible artwork for you to walk through!

Who Discovered the Lemon Squeezer?

The Lemon Squeezer was discovered and given its fun name by a person named J. Ashton Allis. He was one of the important people who helped create and mark the famous Appalachian Trail. In 1921, he explored and marked the Arden-Surebridge Trail, and that's when he found this amazing rock formation.
