Lemonweir is a small, quiet place in Juneau County, Wisconsin, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that don't have their own local government, like a city or a village. Instead, it's part of a larger area called the Town of Lemonweir.

Where is Lemonweir?

Lemonweir is located in the beautiful state of Wisconsin. You can find it about 3 miles (5 kilometers) east-southeast of a town called Mauston. It sits right on County Highway N. The community is named after the Lemonweir River, which flows nearby.

A Look Back: Lemonweir's History

Long ago, Lemonweir was a very important place. People often called it "Lemonweir Mills." This name gives us a clue about its past. It was a busy settlement because of the mills built along the Lemonweir River. Mills are places where raw materials, like logs, are processed into useful products, like lumber.

At one point, Lemonweir was almost as big and important as Mauston. It was a thriving center for trade and industry.

Why Did Lemonweir Change?

Lemonweir's importance began to fade when the railroad was built. The railroad decided to bypass Lemonweir. This meant the trains, which were the main way to transport goods and people, did not stop there.

When the railroad went around Lemonweir, businesses and people started to move to places where the trains did stop. Over time, Lemonweir became much smaller. Today, only a few houses remain, and most of its old buildings are gone. It's a reminder of how transportation can change the fate of a community.
