Leonard King Lesser (born December 3, 1922 – died February 16, 2011) was an American actor. He was famous for playing funny and memorable characters. His most well-known roles were Uncle Leo on the TV show Seinfeld and Garvin on Everybody Loves Raymond.
Early Life and Military Service
Len Lesser was born in New York City in 1922. His father was a grocer who came from Poland. Len went to the City College of New York and earned his college degree in 1942. He was 19 years old.
The day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Len joined the United States Army. He served during World War II in a place called the China Burma India Theater. He was promoted to sergeant during his service.
Acting Career and Famous Roles
Len Lesser was a very busy actor in movies, TV shows, and on stage. He was known as a "character actor." This means he often played unique and interesting supporting roles, rather than the main hero. He appeared on American television for many years, starting in 1955.
He was in popular shows like The Outer Limits, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Gunsmoke, and Get Smart. He also appeared in movies such as Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) and Kelly's Heroes (1970).
One of his most famous roles was Uncle Leo on Seinfeld. He played Jerry Seinfeld's loud and funny uncle. Uncle Leo was known for always greeting Jerry with a big "Hello!" and showing off his arm.
Later in his career, Len Lesser had another popular recurring role. He played Garvin on Everybody Loves Raymond. Garvin was a friend of Frank Barone. Just like Uncle Leo, Garvin would often lift his arms in excitement when he saw Ray. He also guest starred on Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Death and Tributes
Len Lesser passed away on February 16, 2011, in Burbank, California. He was 88 years old. He died from pneumonia related to cancer.
After his death, many people remembered him fondly. Jerry Seinfeld, who played his nephew on Seinfeld, said that Len was one of their favorites. He remembered a funny scene where Uncle Leo had "Jerry Hello" tattooed on his knuckles in prison. Jerry called him a "very sweet guy."
Jason Alexander, who played George Costanza on Seinfeld, also shared his thoughts. He tweeted, "Hellooo Uncle Leo. And goodbye. Sleep well. Much love." These messages showed how much his co-stars appreciated him.
