Leonard Charles Green (born January 6, 1933 – died January 6, 2019) was an American baseball player. He played as an outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 12 seasons. Lenny played for several teams, including the Baltimore Orioles, Washington Senators (who later became the Minnesota Twins), Los Angeles Angels, Boston Red Sox, and Detroit Tigers. He batted and threw with his left hand.

Early Life

Lenny Green was born in Detroit, Michigan. He grew up there and went to Pershing High School.

Baseball Career

Lenny Green started his baseball journey in 1955. He first played in the farm system (minor league teams) for the Baltimore Orioles. After playing a few seasons with the Orioles, he was traded to the Washington Senators in May 1959. This trade was for another player named Albie Pearson, who had been the American League Rookie of the Year in 1958.

Lenny became the main center fielder for the Senators. He played this important role in their last year in Washington (1960). He continued as their regular center fielder when the team moved to Minneapolis-St. Paul and became the Minnesota Twins in 1961 and 1962. In 1963, he shared his position with another player, Jimmie Hall.

Later in his career, Lenny also played as the regular center fielder for the Boston Red Sox in 1965. He finished his MLB career playing for his hometown team, the Detroit Tigers, in 1968. That same year, the Tigers won the World Series. However, Lenny was released from the team in July 1968, before the team's big win.

Over his entire career, Lenny Green played in 1,136 games. He had a batting average of .267, which means he got a hit about 26.7% of the times he tried. He hit 47 home runs and had 253 runs batted in (RBI). He also had 138 doubles, 27 triples, and stole 78 bases. As an outfielder, he was very good at catching the ball, with a .984 fielding percentage.

Later Life

Lenny Green passed away on January 6, 2019. This was also his 86th birthday.
