The Andean rat (Lenoxus apicalis) is also known as the white-tailed akodont. It is the only species in its group, called Lenoxus. This rodent lives on the eastern side of the Andes mountains. You can find it in eastern Peru and western Bolivia.

Scientists have studied the Andean rat's genome (its DNA). They found it is very unique. It is not closely related to another rat called Oxymycterus. In fact, it branched off from other similar rodents a long time ago.

What the Andean Rat Looks Like

The Andean rat is a medium-sized rodent. Its tail is about as long as its body, or even a bit longer. It has a long nose that is wide at the base. Its ears are small and don't have much hair.

The fur on its back is dark, almost black, with some grey mixed in. The sides of its body are a lighter grey. Its belly is brownish-grey, with a hint of light brown.

The tail is brownish-grey and has very little hair. It has many small scales. The last quarter of its tail is white, which makes it easy to spot! The top parts of its feet are grey. This color stands out against its white toes.

Where the Andean Rat Lives

The Andean rat lives only on the eastern slopes of the Andes mountains. Its home range includes southern Peru and northern Bolivia.

It lives in mountain forests and cloud forests. These are forests that are often covered in clouds or mist. It can be found at high altitudes. These areas are between 1,500 and 2,500 meters (about 4,900 to 8,200 feet) above sea level.

How the Andean Rat Lives

We don't know much about the daily life of the Andean rat. Scientists have caught some of these rats in Peru. They found them in paths among thick ferns and tree roots covered in moss.

In Bolivia, other rats were found in forests that were a bit drier. These forests were also less dense. More research is needed to learn about their habits and what they eat.
