Leo C. Zeferetti (July 15, 1927 – March 21, 2018) was an American politician. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He served in the United States House of Representatives for New York. This is a part of the U.S. government where elected officials make laws for the country.
Who Was Leo Zeferetti?
Leo C. Zeferetti was born in Brooklyn, New York City, on July 15, 1927. He grew up and went to public schools in Brooklyn. Later in his life, he became an important leader in government.
Early Life and Public Service
Zeferetti served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. After his military service, he worked for the New York City Department of Correction. He was an officer there from 1957 to 1974. During this time, he also studied at New York University and Baruch College. He did not complete a degree from either school.
He was also involved in other public service roles. From 1972 to 1974, he was a member of the New York State Crime Control Planning Board. This group helped plan how to deal with crime in New York. In 1971, he was a representative at the President's Conference on Correction. He also led the Correction Officers' Benevolent Association as its president from 1968 to 1974. This group supported correction officers.
Serving in Congress
In 1974, Leo Zeferetti was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He represented a district in Brooklyn, New York. This district included areas like Park Slope, Sunset Park, and Bay Ridge. He took over from Hugh Carey, who became the Governor of New York.
Zeferetti served in Congress from 1975 to 1983. During his time, he worked to represent the people of his district. In 1982, the boundaries of his district changed. This process is called redistricting. His district was combined with another one. He then ran against Guy Molinari but was not re-elected.
