Leonard Michael Maltin (born December 18, 1950) is a famous American film critic, film historian, and author. He is best known for his popular book, Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide, which shared short reviews of thousands of movies. This guide was published every year from 1969 to 2014.
Maltin was also the film critic for the TV show Entertainment Tonight for many years, from 1982 to 2010. Today, he teaches about movies at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. He also hosts a weekly podcast called Maltin on Movies. He has helped choose films for the important National Film Registry.

Early life and education
Leonard Maltin was born in New York City on December 18, 1950. His mom, Jacqueline, was a singer, and his dad, Aaron, was a lawyer. Leonard grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey, and finished Teaneck High School in 1968.
He started writing about movies when he was just 15 years old. He wrote for a magazine called Classic Images. He also created and published his own fan magazine, Film Fan Monthly. This magazine was all about movies from the "golden age" of Hollywood. Later, Maltin studied journalism at New York University.

Early writings
While at New York University, Leonard Maltin continued to write about movies. He was a film critic and editor for the university's newspaper. He also kept working on his own magazine, Film Fan Monthly.
When he was only 18, in 1969, Maltin edited his first book. It was called TV Movies. This book was a huge collection of movie summaries and reviews. It was updated regularly and then every year until 2014. The book became very famous and was later known as Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide.
In 1970, he published his second book, Movie Comedy Teams. This book featured famous comedy duos like Laurel and Hardy and the Marx Brothers. Maltin also wrote for many other magazines and newspapers, including Variety and TV Guide. He even wrote a book about how movies are filmed, called Behind the Camera, in 1971.
On TV: Entertainment Tonight
Leonard Maltin became a well-known face on television. Starting in 1982, he was the film reviewer for the popular show Entertainment Tonight. He worked on the show for 30 years, sharing his thoughts on new movies.
He also hosted his own radio show, Leonard Maltin on Video. He helped create the Walt Disney Treasures DVD collection, which brought classic Disney cartoons to fans. Maltin also taught at the New School for Social Research in New York City. Since 2018, he has been teaching at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in California. Maltin left Entertainment Tonight in 2010.
Maltin even appeared as himself in movies and TV shows! He was in Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990). In this movie, he played a film critic who gets attacked by the mischievous Gremlins. He also appeared in the South Park episode "Mecha-Streisand" (1998). In this episode, he teamed up with other famous people to fight a giant robot monster. Maltin also lent his voice to the cartoon Freakazoid!.
Recent projects
Since 2014, Leonard Maltin has hosted a podcast called Maltin on Movies. He first hosted it with comedian Baron Vaughn. Now, he co-hosts the podcast with his daughter, Jessie Maltin. They talk about different movie topics and share their favorite films.
From 2014 to 2019, Maltin also hosted Treasures From the Disney Vault on Turner Classic Movies. This show featured rare and classic Disney films. Since 2016, he has been the main judge for the Coronado Island Film Festival. In 2020, the festival even named their top award "The Leonard Maltin Tribute Award" in his honor.
In 2019, Leonard and his daughter Jessie started their own film festival called MaltinFest. It took place at the Egyptian Theatre and featured special guests. In 2022, he was invited to join the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. This is the group that gives out the Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars!
Personal life
Leonard Maltin lives in Los Angeles. He is married to Alice Tlusty, who is a researcher and producer. They have one daughter, Jessie, who often works with her dad on his projects. His production company, JessieFilm, is named after her.
Awards and honors
- In 1997, Maltin received the Press Award from the International Cinematographers Guild.
- In 2002, he won the June Foray Award from ASIFA-Hollywood. This award is for people who have a big positive impact on animation.
- In 2005, he received the ASC Bud Stone Award of Distinction from the American Society of Cinematographers. That same year, he got the Career Achievement Award at the Temecula Valley International Film Festival.
- In 2007, Maltin received the Telluride Film Festival Silver Medallion for his achievements in the film industry.
- In 2010, he received the NFFC-Disneyana Fan Club Heritage Award.
- In 2010, the National Board of Review honored him with the William K. Everson Film History Award.
- In 2013, Maltin received the Inkpot Award from Comic Con International.
- In 2018, he was added to the Online Film & Television Association's Film Hall of Fame.
- On April 24, 2018, the Los Angeles City Council declared it Leonard Maltin Day!
- In August 2018, the California Independent Film Festival gave Maltin the Golden Slate award. This was for his many years of helping film and film history.
- In 2022, the TCM Film Festival honored Maltin with the Robert Osborne Award. This award recognized his work in keeping classic films alive for future generations.
