About Leonardo Leo

Leonardo Leo was born in a town called San Vito degli Schiavoni. This town is now known as San Vito dei Normanni in the Apulia region of Italy. At that time, it was part of the Kingdom of Naples.

When he was about nine years old, in 1703, Leo began studying music. He went to the Conservatorio della Pietà dei Turchini in Naples. He learned from teachers like Francesco Provenzale and Nicola Fago. Some people thought he also studied with other famous composers, but that wasn't true. However, their music might have inspired him.

His very first known work was a sacred play called L'infedelta abbattuta. His fellow students performed it in 1712.

His Music and Career

In 1714, Leo presented his first opera, Pisistrato, at the royal theater. People really liked it!

He worked in different roles at the royal chapel. He also kept writing music for the stage. Besides composing, he taught at the conservatory, helping new musicians learn.

Leo added funny parts to an opera by another composer in 1722. After that, he started writing his own funny operas in the Neapolitan style. Some of these were La'mpeca scoperta (1723) and L'Alidoro (1740).

His most famous funny opera was Amor vuol sofferenza (1739). It's also known as La Finta Frascatana. This opera was highly praised by many.

Leo was also great at writing serious operas. Some of his well-known serious works include Demofoonte (1735), Farnace (1737), and L'Olimpiade (1737). But he is perhaps even more famous for his sacred music, which is music written for religious purposes.

His Legacy

Sadly, Leonardo Leo died suddenly in 1744 from a stroke. He was working on new songs for a new version of La Finta Frascatana when he passed away.

Leo was a very important composer in the Neapolitan school of music. He was one of the first to truly master modern harmonic counterpoint. This is a way of combining different musical lines to create rich harmonies.

His sacred music is seen as strong and dignified. It focuses more on logic than on strong emotions. It's different from the more emotional music of composers like Francesco Durante and Giovanni Battista Pergolesi.

While his serious operas can feel a bit formal, his funny operas show his great sense of humor. His group music pieces are lively, but they don't always build up to a huge ending.

One good example of his sacred music is the Dixit Dominus in C. You can also find many songs from his operas in modern music books.
