Leonid Vasilyevich Potapov (Russian: Леони́д Васи́льевич Пота́пов; 4 July 1935 – 12 November 2020) was an important leader in the Buryat Republic in Russia. He served as the first President of Buryatia from August 1991 to July 2007. People trusted him, and he was re-elected three times. In his last election in 2002, he won with 68% of the votes.

Early Life and Education

Leonid Potapov was born in a place called Uakit, which is in Buryatia. He grew up there and later went to college. In 1959, he finished his studies at the Khabarovsk Institute of Railway Transport. He became an engineer, which means he was trained to design and build things like railways.

Political Career and Leadership

In early 1990, Leonid Potapov worked as a Vice Chairman in the government of the Turkmen SSR. This was a part of the Soviet Union at the time.

Later in April 1990, he returned to his home region of Buryatia. There, he became the leader of the local communist party branch. In October 1991, he took on an even bigger role. He became the Chairman of the Supreme Council of Buryatia. This was a very important position in the government.

Leonid Potapov became the first President of Buryatia in 1994. He held this top leadership role for many years, until July 2007. He was very popular and was re-elected three times by the people of Buryatia.

Later Life and Passing

Leonid Potapov passed away on November 12, 2020, when he was 85 years old. He died from COVID-19.

Recognitions and Awards

Leonid Potapov received many important awards for his work and service to Russia and Buryatia. These awards show how much he contributed to his country.

  • Order of Merit for the Fatherland;
    • 3rd class (awarded in 2007): This award was given for his great efforts in making the Russian government stronger and for his many years of hard work.
    • 4th class (awarded in 1998): He received this for helping the republic grow economically and socially. It also recognized his work in building friendship and cooperation among different groups of people.
  • Order of Friendship (awarded in 1995): This award was for his service to the country and his achievements. It also recognized his important role in strengthening friendships and cooperation between people.

  • He was also an Honorary Professor at several universities. These included the Buryat State University, Modern University for the Humanities, Irkutsk State University, Irkutsk State Technical University, and the Plekhanov Russian Economic University.
