Leonidas of Rhodes (Ancient Greek: Λεωνίδας ὁ Ῥόδιος) was one of the most famous runners in the Ancient Olympic Games. He was born in 188 BCE on the island of Rhodes. Leonidas competed in four Olympic Games in a row, from 164 BCE to 152 BCE. He won three different running races in each of those Games. Because he won three races in each Olympics, people called him "Triastes," which means "tripler." Many people think Leonidas was one of the greatest sprinters of all time!

Leonidas of Rhodes: Ancient Olympic Champion
Leonidas competed in the 154th Ancient Olympic Games in 164 BCE. This was during the "golden age" of the ancient Games. In these Games, Leonidas won the top prize in three different running events. These races were the stadion, the diaulos, and the hoplitodromos.
Leonidas's Amazing Victories
Leonidas did something truly incredible. He won all three of these races again in the next three Olympic Games! He won in 160 BCE, then in 156 BCE, and finally in 152 BCE. By his last victory, he was 36 years old.
His total number of wins was twelve individual Olympic victory wreaths. No other athlete in the ancient world achieved so many wins. This shows how incredibly talented and versatile he was as a runner.
The Different Races
Leonidas was amazing because he was good at different types of running.
- The stadion was a short sprint, about 200 meters long.
- The diaulos was a bit longer, around 400 meters. Both of these races were perfect for fast sprinters.
- The hoplitodromos was a unique race. Runners had to wear bronze armor and carry a shield while running the diaulos distance. This race needed a lot of strength and endurance, not just speed.
A writer named Philostratus the Athenian wrote about Leonidas. He said that Leonidas's success changed how people thought about training runners. Leonidas proved that a runner could be excellent at both fast sprints and races needing more strength.
