Portrait of Leonora Baroni by Fabio Della Cornia (1600-1643)

Leonora Baroni (born December 1611 – died 6 April 1670) was a talented Italian musician. She was a singer, and she played several instruments like the theorbo (a large lute), the lute, and the viol. Leonora was also a composer, meaning she wrote her own music.

About Leonora Baroni's Life

Leonora Baroni was born in Mantua, Italy, at the court of the House of Gonzaga. Her mother, Adriana Basile, was also a very famous singer known as a virtuosa. Leonora often sang with her mother and her sister, Caterina. They performed for important people in many Italian cities, including Naples, Genoa, and Florence.

Her Amazing Musical Skills

People admired Leonora not only for her incredible musical talent but also for her good manners and intelligence. Many poets and important people wrote poems praising her. These poems were collected and published in books in 1639 and 1641. Even the famous English poet John Milton wrote poems about her singing in Rome.

Life in Rome and France

In 1633, Leonora moved to Rome with her mother. There, she sang at many special gatherings called salons, often held in the grand Palazzo Barberini. In 1640, she married Giulio Cesare Castellani, who was a secretary to a powerful cardinal.

For a short time in 1644, Leonora moved to France to sing for the French queen, Anne of Austria. However, she returned to Rome by April 1645. It seems her Italian style of singing, which used many fancy decorations, was not as popular in the French court.

Her Compositions

Sadly, none of Leonora Baroni's own musical compositions have survived to this day. However, a French musician named André Maugars praised her compositions. He said that her singing showed a deep understanding of music, which was likely helped by her own composing skills.
