History of Lepanto
A long time ago, during the colonial period (when European countries ruled many parts of the world), the whole Nicoya Peninsula was part of an area called the Partido de Nicoya. This area is now known as Guanacaste.
At the start of the 1900s, something changed. The president of Costa Rica, Alfredo González Flores, signed a special order. This order moved Lepanto, along with two other towns called Paquera and Cóbano, to the province of Puntarenas.
Why did this happen? Back then, it was much faster to travel to Paquera by boat from Puntarenas. The land roads to Nicoya were not very good. So, moving these areas to Puntarenas made it easier to manage them.
Today, some people in Guanacaste want the entire Nicoya Peninsula to be part of Guanacaste again. They say that the Inter-American Highway now makes it easy to travel by land to Guanacaste. They also believe that the name "Guanacaste" is well-known around the world for tourism. They think that if the southern beaches of the peninsula were in Guanacaste, more tourists might visit them.
