History of Lerma
Early Beginnings
The town of Lerma has a very long history. It dates back to at least the Iron Age. Back then, a tribe called the vacceos, who were Celtiberians, lived in this area. Lerma was built in a smart spot on a hill. From here, people could easily see the Arlanza River below.
Conquests and Growth
Over time, different groups took control of Lerma. First came the Romans, then the Visigoths, and later the Berbers. In the 900s, Christians took over the area during the Reconquista. The Arlanza River then became an important border.
Lerma grew into a medieval town with strong walls. The 1600s were a time of great growth and wealth for the town. Many beautiful buildings were constructed in the Herrerian style. These were built under the direction of the Duke of Lerma. Today, these buildings are some of the best-preserved historical sites in Spain.
Later Years
After the Duke of Lerma passed away, the town slowly became less important. During the Peninsular War, French soldiers took over Lerma. When they left, they sadly burned and looted parts of the town and its convents.
