Leslie's Early Life and Music
Leslie Harvey was born in Govan, a part of Glasgow, Scotland. He loved music from a young age. In the 1960s, a famous band called the Animals asked him to join. However, Leslie decided to stay and play with his brother Alex in their band, the Alex Harvey Soul Band.
Later, Leslie joined another Scottish band called The Blues Council. This band made one record titled Baby Don't Look Down. In March 1965, a sad accident happened. Their tour van crashed, and two band members, Fraser Calder and James Giffen, died. After this, the rest of the band members went their separate ways.
Playing with Cartoone
In 1969, Leslie joined a Scottish band named Cartoone. He helped them record songs for their second album. He also went on tour with Cartoone in the United States. They opened shows for the very famous rock band Led Zeppelin. Cartoone also supported another US band called Spirit in 1969. A legendary blues musician, John Lee Hooker, even opened for Cartoone during their UK tour. In December 1969, Leslie played guitar on Maurice Gibb's album The Loner. Only one song from that album, "Railroad", was released as a single.
Stone the Crows and Later Years
Leslie Harvey helped start the band Stone the Crows in late 1969. This band became very popular. Leslie was known for his amazing guitar skills. He was even featured on a special double album called The Guitar Album. This album showcased some of the best guitarists of that time. Other guitar legends on the album included Freddy King, BB King, Jimi Hendrix, and Pete Townshend.
A Tragic Accident
In 1972, while performing with Stone the Crows, a terrible accident occurred. Leslie was on stage at a venue in Swansea, Wales. He touched a microphone that was not properly connected to the ground (meaning it wasn't safe). At the same time, his other hand was holding his guitar strings. This caused an electric shock. A person working with the band tried to unplug the guitar, but it was too late. Leslie Harvey sadly passed away from his injuries at the age of 27.
