Leslie François Saint Roc Manigat (born August 16, 1930 – died June 27, 2014) was a politician from Haiti. He became the President of Haiti in 1988 after an election that was closely watched by the military. However, he only served for a few months before the military removed him from power.

Who Was Leslie Manigat?
Leslie Manigat was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Before becoming president, he was a professor. He taught about World History at a university in Paris, France. He also wrote articles about education for newspapers in Haiti.
His Time as President
In January 1988, Leslie Manigat won the presidential election in Haiti. The election results showed he received just over 50% of the votes. However, not many people voted in this election. Many historians and election watchers did not think it was a truly fair election.
He officially became president on February 7, 1988. He chose Martial Célestin to be his Prime Minister. But his time as president was very short. On June 20, 1988, General Henri Namphy led a coup d'état. A coup d'état is when a group, usually the military, illegally takes power from the government. This meant Leslie Manigat was removed from office.
Later Life and Family
After being removed from power, Leslie Manigat tried to become president again. He ran in the February 2006 election but did not win. He came in second place.
Leslie Manigat's second wife was Mirlande Manigat. They married in 1970. Mirlande Manigat also became a politician and ran for president in the 2010 election.
Leslie Manigat passed away on June 27, 2014, when he was 83 years old.
Awards and Writings
In 2004, Leslie Manigat received a special honor called The Haiti Grand Prize of Literature. This award was given at the Miami Book Fair International.
He also wrote several books. Some of his works include:
