Leverich Park facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Leverich Park is a fun, natural park in Vancouver, Washington. It covers about 33 acres (13 hectares) and is located next to Burnt Bridge Creek. The park is a great place for outdoor activities. You can find a large picnic area, lots of hiking trails, and even a twelve-hole Disc golf course.

What is the History of Leverich Park?

Leverich Park became a city park in 1931. Mrs. Anna Leverich donated the land to the city. The park was named after her. It was important to keep the park's natural beauty. This means the trees, hills, and creek were protected.

In 1931, a special stone monument was put up. A Douglas fir tree was also planted. This was part of a big celebration for George Washington's 200th birthday. The park has a lovely, forest-like feel. It has native firs, other trees, and cedars. Burnt Bridge Creek flows through the park, adding to its charm.

Later, when Interstate 5 was built, it went right through Vancouver. This highway split Leverich Park into two parts. Some historic places, like the Covington House and Kiggins Bowl, became separate from the main park area.

What is Disc Golf at Leverich Park?

In 2008, a twelve-hole disc golf course was added to Leverich Park. Disc golf is a sport similar to golf, but you throw a flying disc (like a frisbee) instead of hitting a ball. The goal is to get the disc into a special basket in the fewest throws possible.

The course was created thanks to teamwork. Vancouver-Clark Parks and Recreation worked with Vancouver-Clark Disc Golf and Stumptown Disc Golf. This made it possible for people to enjoy disc golf in the park.
