History of the Levi Anderson House
The oldest part of the Levi Anderson House was built in 1826. The first person to live there was William Robinson (1764 - 1834). He was one of the very first settlers in Ross County, arriving in 1795.
Early Settlers and Land
William Robinson bought about 300 acres (120 ha) of land around where the house stands today. He built a small log cabin on his property. This made him the first settler in Union Township.
Levi Anderson's Improvements
In 1838, Levi Anderson (1790 - 1846) bought the property. He decided to make the house much bigger. He also wanted to make the inside look more beautiful. Levi's brother, Gershon Anderson (1780 - 1842), helped with these changes. Gershon was a skilled craftsman. He created detailed woodworking designs inside the house. These beautiful wooden details are still there today.
Architecture and Design
The Levi Anderson House is made of brick. The outside is covered with weatherboarding, which helps protect the house. It sits on a strong foundation made of sandstone. The house also has decorations made from wood and stone.
Greek Revival Style
The house shows off the Greek Revival style. This style was inspired by ancient Greek temples. It often features tall columns, simple shapes, and a grand, balanced look. The Levi Anderson House is a good example of this style in Ohio.
Preserving History
Many of the original parts of the house are still in great condition. Because of its well-preserved historic architecture, the Levi Anderson House is very important. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in late 1976. This means it's recognized as a special historical site. It was listed for its unique architecture and its connection to the early settlement of the area.
