Levi Barnabas's Political Journey
Early Years in Politics
In 1999, Levi Barnabas was elected to the first-ever 1st Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. This was a big moment for the new territory. He served as an MLA for the area called Quttiktuq.
However, in August 2000, he stepped down from his position. This led to the first special election, called a by-election, in Nunavut's history. A by-election is held when a political seat becomes empty before the next general election.
Running for Office Again
Levi Barnabas decided to run in the by-election held in December 2000. However, he was not elected that time. Rebekah Williams won the seat instead.
He didn't give up on serving his community. He ran again in the 2004 Nunavut general election. This election was very close and exciting. In the end, Levi Barnabas won the election. He received more than twice as many votes as Rebekah Williams. He then served another term as an MLA for Quttiktuq until 2008.
