Levi Barnabas was born on January 24, 1964. He is a Canadian politician from Igloolik, Nunavut. He has played an important role in the government of Canada's newest territory.
Early Political Career
Levi Barnabas first became a politician in 1995. He was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. He represented the area of Quttiktuq. He served in this role until 1999.
In 1999, Nunavut was created as a new Canadian territory. This was a big moment for the Inuit people. Levi Barnabas became an MLA for the new Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. He represented the same area, Quttiktuq.
He made history by becoming the very first Speaker of Nunavut's Legislative Assembly. The Speaker is like a referee in a debate. They make sure meetings run smoothly and everyone follows the rules.
Later Elections
After serving as Speaker, Barnabas ran in a special election in December 2000. This type of election is called a by-election. He was not elected in this race. Rebekah Williams won the election instead.
However, Levi Barnabas ran again in the 2004 Nunavut election. This time, he won the election. He defeated Rebekah Williams and returned to serve as the MLA for Quttiktuq. He continued to represent his community until 2008.
