The Story Behind the Name
Lewis got its name from a person! A man named Herbert L. Dunbar named the community after Frank Lewis. Frank Lewis's wife, Alta E. Lewis, played an important role in the community's early days.

Alta E. Lewis was the very first postmaster for Lewis. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office. The community's post office opened its doors on September 11, 1913. It helped people send and receive mail for many years. The post office served the community until May 1935.
