Lewis Arthur Trevor James Galbraith Pooler (born January 29, 1858 – died June 15, 1924) was an important Anglican priest in Ireland during the early 1900s. He dedicated his life to serving the church and his community. He held many important positions and was known for his strong leadership.

Early Life and Education

Lewis Pooler was the son of James Galbraith Pooler. He went to school at The Royal School, Armagh. This was a well-known school in Ireland. After that, he studied at Trinity College, Dublin. He was a very bright student there. He even won two top prizes, showing how smart he was.

Becoming a Church Leader

After finishing his studies, Lewis Pooler first worked as a teacher. He taught at his old school, The Royal School, Armagh. In 1882, he decided to become a church minister. He was "ordained" as a deacon. This is the first step to becoming a priest. The next year, in 1883, he became a full priest.

His first job as a priest was at St James' Church in Belfast. He worked there as a "curate." This means he was an assistant to the main priest.

Important Roles in the Church

Lewis Pooler held many important jobs throughout his career. From 1899 to 1912, he was the "Rector" of Hollymount. A rector is the main priest in charge of a church and its area.

Later, in 1912, he became the Archdeacon of Down. This was a very senior position. An archdeacon helps the bishop manage churches in a large area. He held this important role until he passed away.

He also had several other special titles:

  • He was an "Honorary Canon" at St Patricks Cathedral, Dublin. This is a special honor given to experienced priests.
  • He was an "Examining Chaplain" for the bishops of Down, Connor and Dromore. This meant he helped test new priests.
  • He was a "Rural Dean" for Lecale East. This role involved overseeing churches in a smaller local area.
  • He was also a member of the Representative Church Body of the Church of Ireland. This group helps manage the church's money and property.
  • He served as the Honorary Secretary of the Church of Ireland's General Synod. The General Synod is like the church's parliament, where important decisions are made.
