Lewis and Harris make up the largest island in Scotland. This island is part of the Outer Hebrides, a group of islands off Scotland's west coast. It is the largest single island in the British Isles after Great Britain and Ireland.

The island does not have one common name in English or Scottish Gaelic. So, it is always called 'Lewis and Harris'.

All About Lewis and Harris

One Island, Two Names

The island has two main parts. The northern part is called Lewis. The southern part is known as Harris. Even though they are connected, people often talk about them as if they were separate islands! A natural line, formed by Loch Resort in the west and Loch Seaforth in the east, marks the boundary between Lewis and Harris. The biggest town on the island is Stornoway, which is in Lewis.

Where is This Island?

For a long time, Lewis was part of a county called Ross and Cromarty. Harris belonged to Inverness-shire. But since 1975, the whole island group is managed by the Western Isles Council. This council looks after the entire island.

Who Calls Lewis and Harris Home?

This island is a special place for some old Scottish families. It is the traditional home of the Highland Clan MacLeod and the Clan Morrison. These clans are groups of families who share a common ancestor and history in the Scottish Highlands.
