Liam Redmond (born July 27, 1913 – died October 28, 1989) was a famous Irish character actor. He was known for his many roles on stage, in movies, and on television. A character actor plays unusual or interesting supporting roles instead of the main hero.

Liam Redmond's Early Life

Liam Redmond was one of four children. His father, Thomas, was a cabinet-maker. Liam went to school in Dublin, at the Christian Brothers schools. Later, he studied at University College, Dublin. He first started studying medicine, but then he decided to switch to drama.

Becoming an Actor

While at university, Liam was the head of the Dramatic Society. There, he met Barbara MacDonagh, who was the society's secretary. They got married and had four children together. Barbara's father was Thomas MacDonagh, a leader in the 1916 Rising.

Starting at the Abbey Theatre

In 1935, Liam Redmond was asked to join the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. This was a very famous Irish theatre. The famous Irish poet, William Butler Yeats, invited him to be a producer there. Yeats even wrote a play called Death of Cuchullain for Liam to star in. Liam played Cúchullain, a hero from an old Irish myth.

Liam's first acting role at the Abbey Theatre was in 1935. He appeared in a play called The Silver Tassie by Seán O'Casey. His first time acting on stage in New York City was in 1939. The play was called The White Steed.

Acting in London and Beyond

When Second World War started, Liam returned to Britain. He often performed on the London stage. He also helped start an organization called WAAMA. This group helped writers, artists, actors, and musicians. It was an early version of what is now Irish Actors' Equity. This group worked to make sure actors were paid fairly for their work.

Liam also performed on Broadway in New York. In 1955, he won an award for his role in The Wayward Saint. He also starred in plays like Loot in 1968.

Liam Redmond on TV and Film

From the 1950s to the 1980s, Liam Redmond worked a lot in TV and movies. You might have seen him in popular TV shows like The Avengers and The Saint. He was also in Daniel Boone and Z-Cars.

Many fans especially remember his role in the horror film Night of the Demon (1957). He played a kind expert on strange things.

Liam Redmond retired to Dublin. He passed away in 1989 at the age of 76. He had been unwell for some time. His wife, Barbara, had passed away two years earlier in 1987.
