Her book Museum of Thieves won the 2010 Aurealis Award for Children's Long Fiction. It was also named a "Notable Book" in the 2011 Australian Children's Book of the Year Award. This book was also shortlisted for other awards, like the Australian Independent Booksellers' Award. The Bank Street Children's Book Committee chose it as one of the Best Children's Books of the Year. It was even picked as one of the "50 Books You Can’t Put Down" in Australia's "Get Reading!" Campaign in 2011. The International Youth Library in Munich also named it a "White Raven."

City of Lies, the second book in the Keepers trilogy, won the 2011 Aurealis Award for Children's Fiction. In 2020, Lian Tanner and illustrator Jonathan Bentley won the Patricia Wrightson Prize for Children's Literature for their book Ella and the Ocean. In 2021, Tanner won the Davitt Award for Children's crime novel for her book A Clue for Clara.
