History of Liberal
Early Settlement
The community of Liberal started about three miles south of Mulino. It grew up on the south side of the Molalla River. The main crossroads of Liberal is where several early land claims met. These claims were set up in the 1840s by pioneers like Harrison Wright and William Russell.
As these large land claims were divided, families began to settle in the area. Many of these early settlers in the mid-1800s were from Switzerland and Germany.
How Liberal Got Its Name
People in the area tell a story about how Liberal got its name. They say it was named after the "liberal" or generous way the owner of the first store gave credit. This means the store owner was very trusting and let people buy things even if they didn't have all the money right away.
What Liberal Is Like Today
Today, Liberal is still a small, active community. It has the historic Liberal Store, which has been there for a long time. There's also a working sawmill and a mill that makes chicken feed. A multi-generational family farm also operates here. The Evangelical Community Chapel, a church, has been holding weekly meetings since it was founded in 1900.
