Libertad is a small city located in the southern part of Uruguay. It's found in the San José Department. The city has a main street called 25 de Agosto and a central square named Plaza Treinta y Tres Orientales.

Libertad was first started in November 1872. Over the years, its official status changed as it grew.

  • In 1902, it was officially declared a "Pueblo," which means a village.
  • Then, in 1953, it became a "Villa," which is like a town.
  • Finally, in 1963, Libertad was given the title of "Ciudad," meaning it became a city!

One important building in Libertad is the Parish Church of Our Lady of Sorrows and St. Isidore the Laborer. This is a Roman Catholic church. It is cared for by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate.
