History of the Mall
Building the Liberty Tree Mall started in 1969. The mall officially opened its doors on February 21, 1972. It was made bigger and updated in 1980 and again in 1993.
The mall is very close to the Northshore Mall in Peabody. Both malls are mostly owned by Simon Property Group. Since the 1980s, the Liberty Tree Mall has focused on stores with lower prices. The Northshore Mall has focused on more mainstream or fancy stores. This helps both malls do well without competing too much.
What's in a Name?
The name Liberty Tree comes from a famous tree in Boston. This tree was a symbol of freedom during the American Revolution. For many years, a large metal tree sculpture stood in the middle of the mall. It was there to remember the original Liberty Tree. This sculpture was designed by Albert Surman. It was even shown at the 1964–65 New York World's Fair. Sadly, the sculpture was taken away between 1988 and 1992 and is now missing.
Changes Over the Years
In 1980, the mall added a food court. This is a place where you can find different restaurants. A Marshalls store was also added in the 1980s. It is the only original main store that is still there today.
Many stores have come and gone over the years. Ann & Hope was one of the first big stores, opening in 1969. Lechmere opened with the mall in 1972. Both of these stores later closed.
In 1997, Lechmere and Filene's Basement were taken down. New stores like Target, Staples, Dollar Tree, and Best Buy were built in their place. This happened between 1998 and 1999.
Ann & Hope closed all its stores in 2001, including the one at Liberty Tree Mall. This large space was later rebuilt into a Kohl's store. A Stop & Shop grocery store and Pier 1 Imports were also built nearby. A big movie theater with 20 screens, called Loews Theatres, was also added.
In 2008, Stop & Shop closed. Its space was then used for Nordstrom Rack and Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse. These stores opened in November 2008.
More recently, some stores have closed. A.C. Moore announced it would close all its stores in 2019. This included the one at Liberty Tree Mall. In 2020, Pier 1 Imports also announced it was closing all its locations.
