Lidingöloppet is a big annual cross country running race held in Lidingö, Sweden. It's a competition where runners race across natural terrain like fields and forests. The main race is 30 kilometers long. About 15,000 people run this race every year. There are also shorter races that thousands of people join. This makes Lidingöloppet the largest cross-country running event in the world! It takes place every year on the last weekend of September.
The idea for Lidingöloppet came from a sports journalist named Sven Lindhagen. He wanted to create a big running event for everyday joggers, similar to the famous Vasaloppet ski race. The first Lidingöloppet was held in 1965. Only 644 people took part in that first race. Over the years, the number of runners grew quickly. By the 2010s, around 40,000 people were participating each year. In 2022, 23,265 people finished the race. Many long-distance runners who train at the Bosön sports center also join Lidingöloppet. A large IT company from India, Tata Consultancy Services, is the main sponsor of this event.
