Ingrid Kristiansen (born March 21, 1956) is a famous former athlete from Norway. She was one of the very best female long-distance runners in the 1980s. She once held the world record for the 5000 metres, 10,000 metres, and the marathon all at the same time!

Ingrid Kristiansen was the first athlete ever to win world titles in three different types of running: on a track, on roads, and in cross-country races. She also competed in the Olympic Games.

Ingrid's Running Journey

Ingrid Kristiansen's running career started quietly. Her first few marathons took her between 2 hours 30 minutes and 2 hours 40 minutes to complete.

In 1980, she won a bronze medal in the 3000 metres at the World Championships in Athletics. In 1983, she won the Houston Marathon. She was two months pregnant at the time, but she didn't know it!

Becoming a Top Runner

After her first son, Gaute, was born, Ingrid's running times got much better.

  • In 1984, she won the Houston Marathon again and also the London Marathon.
  • She placed fourth in the first-ever women's Olympic marathon at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
  • She also set two new world records on the track:
    • The 5,000 metres record (14:58.9) on June 28, 1984.
    • The 10,000 metres record (30:59.42) on July 27, 1985, at the Bislett Games in Oslo.

Breaking Marathon Records

In 1985, Ingrid won the London Marathon again. She set a new world record for the marathon with a time of 2 hours, 21 minutes, and 6 seconds. This record lasted for 13 years! Later that year, she came in second at the Chicago Marathon.

A Great Year: 1986

The year 1986 was one of Ingrid Kristiansen's best on the track.

  • She won the Boston Marathon.
  • She set a new world record in the 10,000 metres (30:13.3), beating her own record by 46 seconds.
  • She then broke the 5,000 metres world record, running it in 14:37.89.
  • She won the Chicago Marathon again.
  • She finished the year by winning the 10,000 metres at the European Athletics Championships. Her time was the second fastest ever, and she was almost 40 seconds ahead of the runner-up!

Later Career and Retirement

In 1987, Ingrid won the London Marathon again and also the first World Championships Women's 10,000 metres in Rome, even though she had a leg injury.

In 1988, she won the London Marathon for the fourth time. At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, she had to stop during the 10,000 metres race because of a broken bone in her foot. She was leading the race at the time.

She returned to racing in 1989 and won the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon. She slowly raced less and less, finally retiring in 1993. Ingrid Kristiansen won 14 out of the 26 marathons she entered! Today, she lives in Oslo, Norway, with her husband and two children.
