Light Rail Transit Association facts for kids
The Light Rail Transit Association (LRTA) is a special group that works to support and improve light rail and tram systems. Think of light rail as modern, electric trains that run on tracks, often in cities. Trams are similar, but usually run right on city streets. The LRTA used to be called the Light Railway Transport League (LRTL). This group is a non-profit organisation, which means it doesn't aim to make money. Instead, its main goal is to help keep and grow these important public transport systems. The LRTA also publishes a monthly magazine called Tramways & Urban Transit. While it started in the United Kingdom, its members and work reach all around the world.
A Look Back: The LRTA's Story
The Light Rail Transit Association started a long time ago, in 1937. Back then, it was known as the Light Railway Transport League. They changed their name to the LRTA in 1979.
When the group first formed, many of Britain's city tram systems were starting to disappear. People thought trams were old-fashioned.
How the LRTA Helped Modern Transport
Because trams were declining, the LRTA worked hard to promote new, modern light rail systems in the UK. They looked at successful "Stadtbahn" systems in Germany as examples. These are fast, efficient tram-trains.
The LRTA's efforts helped bring about new transport lines. For example, the Tyne and Wear Metro opened in 1980. The Manchester Metrolink followed in 1991.
Since then, other new tram systems have opened. These include Sheffield, Birmingham, Croydon, and Nottingham. All these new systems fit perfectly with what the LRTA wanted to achieve.
