Ligia Gargallo has worked at several universities. These include the University of Tarapacá in Arica and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile in Santiago.

She studied chemistry at many places. In 1959, she earned a degree from the University of Chile. She also studied in Paris and Belgium. She received two doctorates in chemistry. One was from the University of Liège in 1972. The other was from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

Her main research area is Polymers and Macromolecules. Polymers are like long chains made of many small units. Think of plastic or rubber. Macromolecules are very large molecules. Her work has helped people who design medicines.

Awards and Recognition

Ligia Gargallo has won important awards for her science work. In 2007, she received the Prize L'Oréal-UNESCO to Women in Science. This award celebrates women who do great things in science.

In 2014, she won Chile's National Prize for Natural Sciences. She earned this prize for her "pioneering work." This means she was one of the first to do important research. Her work helped develop the chemistry of polymers and macromolecules.
