Lila Tretikov (born Olga Tretyakova on January 25, 1978) is a talented Russian-American engineer and manager. She is well-known for her work in technology and for being the former executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation, the organization that runs Wikipedia.

Early Life and Learning

Lila Tretikov was born in Moscow, which was then part of the Soviet Union. Her father was a mathematician, and her mother worked as a filmmaker.

When she was 15, Lila moved to New York City. She learned English by working as a waitress. Later, she attended the University of California, Berkeley. She studied computer science and art there. During her studies, she researched machine learning, which is about teaching computers to learn from data. She left the university before finishing her degree.

Her Career Journey

In 1999, Lila Tretikov started her career as a software engineer in California. A software engineer is someone who designs and builds computer programs. She helped create several software patents, which are legal rights for new inventions. She became an expert in enterprise software, which is software used by large companies.

Lila began her professional journey at Sun Microsystems. She worked on the Java server for the Sun-Netscape Alliance. After that, she started her own technology marketing company called GrokDigital. Later, she became a top leader at SugarCRM Inc., serving as chief information officer and vice president of engineering.

Leading Wikimedia Foundation

In May 2014, Lila Tretikov was chosen to be the executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation. This is the non-profit organization that supports Wikipedia and other free knowledge projects. She started this important role on June 1, 2014. Interestingly, she had only edited Wikipedia once before she was appointed to lead the foundation.

Lila left the Wikimedia Foundation on March 31, 2016. Her departure was due to disagreements and a project called "Knowledge Engine." Katherine Maher took over her role in March 2016.

After Wikimedia

After leaving Wikimedia, Lila Tretikov continued her impressive career. In March 2016, the World Economic Forum invited her to join its Young Global Leaders community. This group brings together young leaders from around the world.

Lila has also served on the boards of several companies. These include OpenEd and Rackspace. In March 2021, she joined the board of directors for Volvo Cars, a well-known car company. In 2018, she started working at Microsoft Corporation. There, she was a Corporate Vice President and Deputy Chief Technology Officer. Later, she moved to New Enterprise Associates, a company that invests in new businesses. She became a Partner and Head of AI Strategy there. She also joined the Board of Directors of Xylem Inc..
