Lila Tretikov (born Olga Tretyakova, January 25, 1978) is a Russian-American engineer and manager. She is known for her work in technology and for being the former executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation, the organization that runs Wikipedia.

Early Life and Education

Lila Tretikov was born in Moscow, which was then part of the Soviet Union. Her father was a mathematician, and her mother was a filmmaker. When she was 15, she moved to New York City. She learned English by working as a waitress.

She later attended the University of California, Berkeley. There, she studied computer science and art. She also did research on machine learning, which is how computers learn from data. She left college before finishing her degree.

Career in Technology

In 1999, Lila Tretikov started her career as a software engineer in California. She helped create several software inventions and was an expert in special computer programs for businesses.

She began her professional journey at Sun Microsystems. She worked on the Java server, which helps websites and apps run. Later, she started her own company called GrokDigital, which focused on technology marketing.

Tretikov then became the chief information officer and vice president of engineering at SugarCRM Inc. This company makes software for managing customer relationships. She also helped create several patents for smart data mapping and language applications.

Leading the Wikimedia Foundation

In May 2014, Lila Tretikov was chosen to be the executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation. This is the non-profit organization that supports Wikipedia and its sister projects. She started her new role on June 1, 2014. Before this, she had only edited Wikipedia once.

She left the Wikimedia Foundation on March 31, 2016, due to some challenges and disagreements. Katherine Maher took over her position.

Current Roles and Board Memberships

On March 16, 2016, the World Economic Forum invited Tretikov to join its Young Global Leaders community. This group brings together young leaders from around the world.

Lila Tretikov also serves on the boards of several companies. She is on the board of OpenEd and Rackspace. In March 2021, she joined the board of directors for Volvo Cars, a well-known car company. In 2018, she joined Microsoft Corporation. She is currently a Corporate Vice President and Deputy Chief Technology Officer at Microsoft.
