Kids Encyclopedia Facts

M. Lilian Simpson (born around 1871, died 1897) was a talented British sculptor. She created beautiful artworks, especially during the late 1800s.

About Lilian Simpson

Lilian Simpson studied art in London during the 1890s. She attended the National Art Training School, often called NATS. A famous sculptor named Édouard Lantéri was one of her teachers. NATS later became the well-known Royal College of Art in 1896.

Lilian studied alongside other skilled female sculptors. These included Margaret Giles, Ruby Levick, Esther Moore, Florence Steele, and Lucy Gwendolen Williams. This shows that many women were making their mark in the art world at that time.

Her Artistic Achievements

In 1894, Lilian won a big award: a gold medal and a special scholarship to travel. She earned this in the National Art Competition for a silver book cover she designed. It was a "low relief" piece, meaning the design was slightly raised from the surface.

Even while she was still a student, Lilian's artwork was noticed. Two of her pieces, including a bronze box called a casket, were shown at the Royal Academy in London. This is a very important place for artists to display their work. She also exhibited with the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, a group that promoted beautiful, handmade items.

In 1896 and 1897, her art was also displayed in exhibitions in Leeds and Liverpool. These shows helped more people see her talent.

Travel and Legacy

In 1897, Lilian used her travel scholarship to visit Italy. This was a great chance for her to study art and history in a famous country. Sadly, while she was there, she became ill with typhoid fever. She passed away later that year at the age of 26.

Even though her life was short, Lilian Simpson left behind important artwork. Her award-winning 1894 silver book cover is now kept safe at the British Library.
