About Ruby Levick

Ruby Levick was born in a place called Llandaff in Wales. Her father, George Levick, was an engineer. She also had a younger brother named George Murray Levick, who became a famous explorer!

Her Art School Days

Ruby loved art from a young age. She went to the National Art Training School (NATS) in London. This was between 1893 and 1897. At NATS, she learned from a well-known sculptor named Édouard Lantéri.

Ruby was very good at her studies. She even won a gold medal for a small statue she made. It was called Boys Wrestling. Many other talented female sculptors were her classmates. These included Margaret Giles and Esther Moore. NATS later became the Royal College of Art in 1896.

What Ruby Sculpted

Ruby Levick was known for her bronze statuettes. These are small statues made of bronze metal. She also made beautiful garden pieces. Her art often showed children playing. She also sculpted people in motion.

Some of her most admired works were statues of male athletes. She also made groups of working people. One famous piece was called Fishermen Hauling in a Net. It showed people working together.

Ruby also created art for churches. She made special panels for the Chapel of St Edmund in Hunstanton. She also made panels and a reredos (a decorated screen behind an altar) for St Brelades in Jersey.

Where Her Art Was Shown

Ruby Levick's art was very popular. It was shown in many important exhibitions. She exhibited her work at the Society of Medallists. This happened in 1898 and 1901.

Her art was also displayed with the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. This was in 1899, 1903, and 1916. You could also see her work at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. She also showed her art at the Ridley Art Club. And, of course, at the famous Royal Academy of Arts in London.
