Lilium catesbaei, also known as Catesby's lily, pine lily, leopard lily, tiger lily, or southern-red lily, is a beautiful wild flower. It grows naturally in Florida and the coastal areas of the American Southeast. You can usually find it in wet places, from Louisiana all the way to Virginia.

Catesby's Lily: A Special Flower

Catesby's lily is quite unique among lily species. It needs a very specific type of soil to grow well. This soil must be hot, wet, and acidic. Most other types of lilies would not be able to survive in these conditions.

What It Looks Like

This lily plant usually grows just one flower. The flower stands upright and has six parts that look like petals. These parts are called tepals. Tepals are special because they are a mix of petals and sepals, which are usually different.

The tepals on Catesby's lily curve backward. They are bright orange at their tips. Closer to the center of the flower, they become yellow. You can also see purple spots near the base of each tepal.

When It Blooms

Catesby's lily typically blooms later in the year. This means you are more likely to see its vibrant flowers in the late summer or fall months. Its bright colors add a splash of beauty to the damp areas where it lives.
