Lilla Edet is a small town in Västra Götaland County, Sweden. It is the main town, or "seat," of the Lilla Edet Municipality. In 2010, about 4,862 people lived there.
Where is Lilla Edet?
Lilla Edet is located on the eastern side of the Göta älv, a major river on Sweden's west coast. The town became known as an important stopping point along the river.
The name "Lilla Edet" means "Little Edet." This was to tell it apart from "Stora Edet," which means "Big Edet." Stora Edet is located north of Lilla Edet and is now known as Trollhättan. For a long time, Lilla Edet's official name was actually Bergaström.
Sweden's First Lock System
Lilla Edet is famous for its special water system. A canal lock system was built here way back in 1607. This was the very first lock system of its kind in all of Sweden! Locks help boats travel between different water levels in a river or canal.
A Day of Fires
On June 25, 1888, Lilla Edet was one of three towns in Sweden that experienced big fires. It was the smallest of the three places to burn. The other two towns, Sundsvall and Umeå, were made mostly of wood and were almost completely destroyed. These fires were a very big deal at the time and were reported all over the world.
