Lilla Edet Municipality (which is Lilla Edets kommun in Swedish) is a special area in western Sweden. It's like a county or district, and its main town is called Lilla Edet. This municipality is part of Västra Götaland County.
The way Lilla Edet Municipality looks today was decided in 1971. Before that, smaller towns and areas like Lilla Edet (which became a market town in 1951), parts of Flundre, Inlands Torpe, and Lödöse joined together to form this larger municipality.
Towns and Villages
Here are some of the main towns and villages in Lilla Edet Municipality, with their populations from December 31, 2005:
- Lilla Edet (the main town) had about 4,936 people.
- Lödöse had about 1,265 people.
- Göta had about 962 people.
- Nygård had about 436 people.
- Hjärtum had about 384 people.
One of these places, Lödöse, is quite famous in Sweden. It was the very first place where the big city of Gothenburg was located a long, long time ago. In the Middle Ages, Lödöse was a busy city with an important harbor. But then, in 1473, the harbor and city were moved to where Gothenburg is now, and Lödöse became much smaller. Today, you can visit an interesting museum in Lödöse that shows many old objects from its past.
