Lillian Singleton Dove (born around 1895, died 1975) was an important American doctor. She was one of the first African American women to become a physician and a surgeon. Dr. Dove opened her own medical office in Chicago in 1921. Besides her medical work, she also helped her community a lot. Later, she moved to Glencoe, Illinois.

Early Life and Medical Career

Lillian Dove finished her studies at Meharry Medical College in 1917. She was one of the very first African American women to become a surgeon. After graduating, she worked at the Home Infirmary in Clarksville, Tennessee.

In 1921, Dr. Dove opened her own medical practice in Chicago. This made her one of the first African American women doctors in that city. She was a leader on the Scientific Staff for the 1928 Woman's World's Fair in Chicago. Dr. Dove also wrote health articles for Chicago Defender newspaper. In 1933, she even got a patent for a special medicine. This medicine was designed to help with common health issues for women.

Community Involvement

Dr. Dove was very active in the Chicago community. She led a group for professional women. This group helped women connect with local business owners. Dr. Dove also gave talks on many different topics. She spoke at church gatherings and club meetings. She was a member of the Douglass League of Women Voters. She also belonged to Alpha Kappa Alpha, a sorority for African American women.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1946, Dr. Dove moved to Glencoe, Illinois. She was the first adult follower of the Baha'i faith to live in that city. In 1954, Jet magazine wrote about Dr. Dove. They noted she had a special station wagon. She planned to use it to travel West with her family if there was an atomic bomb attack. This showed her careful planning for safety.

Lillian Dove passed away on June 17, 1975, at the age of 80. She died at Highland Park Hospital. Her life showed how one person can make a big difference in medicine and in their community.
