Lily Kronberger in action

Lily Kronberger (born November 12, 1890 – died May 21, 1974) was a fantastic Hungarian figure skater. She was one of the first amazing figure skaters when the sport was just starting. Lily was also Hungary's very first World Champion in figure skating!

Early Life

Lily Kronberger was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1890. She was the youngest child in her family. Lily was also the only daughter of Miksa Kronberger and Janka Kreisler.

Skating Career

Lily Kronberger started making history in figure skating very early on.

First Medals

In 1906, she won a bronze medal at the World Figure Skating Championships. This was a big deal because it was the first time ladies' events were officially part of the World Championships! She won another bronze medal in 1907.

Four Gold Medals

After her bronze medals, Lily went on to win four gold medals in a row! She won gold at the World Championships from 1908 to 1911. This made her the first athlete ever to win a world championship gold medal for Hungary.

A Special Performance

At the 1911 championship in Vienna, Lily did something really cool and unusual. She brought a military band to play music while she skated her free program! This was a very memorable moment.

Retirement

Later in 1911, Lily Kronberger got married to Imre Szent-Györgyi. She then decided to retire from competitive skating. After she retired, another great Hungarian skater, Opika Méray Horváth, became the next champion. Lily Kronberger passed away in Budapest in 1974, when she was 83 years old.

Halls of Fame

Lily Kronberger was a Jewish athlete. She has been honored for her amazing achievements in figure skating.

  • In 1983, she was added to the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
  • In 1997, she was also inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
