History of Limaní
Becoming Part of the United States
After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States government did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 1,075 people lived in Limaní barrio at that time.
Over the years, the number of people living in Limaní has changed:
- In 1950, there were 651 people.
- By 1980, the population was 218.
- In 2010, the census showed that 276 people lived in Limaní.
Notable Residents
Youngest Farmer and Entrepreneur
Limaní is home to José Esteban Lopez Maldonado, a very special young person known as the "Agricultural Son of Puerto Rico." He is Puerto Rico's youngest farmer and also an entrepreneur, which means he starts and runs his own businesses.
When he was just 14 years old, in 2017, José Esteban Lopez Maldonado started his own school! It's called the Esteban Bianchi Maldonado Agricultural School (or Escuela Agrícola Esteban Bianchi Maldonado in Spanish). This school helps teach others about farming and agriculture.
