History of Lincoln Acres
Lincoln Acres began during the Great Depression. Many farmers from the Midwest moved there to start small farms. The community was named after Abraham Lincoln. Over time, these farms became homes, and many Mexican Americans came to live in the area.
In 1967, there was an attempt to make Lincoln Acres part of National City, but it did not happen. By 1975, the community had grown a lot. In 2019, a small part of Lincoln Acres was officially added to the city of National City.
Important Places and Groups
La Vista Cemetery
The La Vista Cemetery takes up a large area in Lincoln Acres. It has two main parts. One part is well-maintained because money is set aside for its care. The other part, called Rest Haven, does not have money for upkeep. Families of those buried there are responsible for maintaining the graves. This means you might see unique, handmade headstones and older wooden crosses in Rest Haven.
Community Library
The first library in Lincoln Acres opened in 1940. Today, the community has a branch of the San Diego County Library system. The original library building was very small. In 2010, construction began on a new, much larger library. It opened in 2013 and is three times bigger than the old one. The new library has a special reading room named after a volunteer who helped the library for many years. After the new building was finished, a famous artist named Sal Barajas worked with the community to create a mural on the building.
Lower Sweetwater Fire Protection District
While Lincoln Acres gets most of its government services from San Diego County, it has one local elected group: the Lower Sweetwater Fire Protection District. This fire district was created in 1945.
This special district has a board of three members. Their main job is to manage a contract with the National City Fire Department. This contract pays National City to provide fire protection for Lincoln Acres. The money for this contract comes from property taxes paid by landowners in Lincoln Acres.
In 2002, there was a vote to close down the Lower Sweetwater Fire Protection District. This idea was called "Proposition R." However, most residents voted against it. Many people worried that if the fire district was dissolved, Lincoln Acres might become part of National City.
